Expert reveals why it sometimes takes dads 6 months to bond with a newborn

A psychologist shares tips to help form a bond with your child.

Dr. Anna Machin, an evolutionary psychologist, reveals it could take a new father close to six months to born with a newborn.

However, making that connection is crucial, even if it takes more time.

"It can take a good six months for a new dad to bond with their child but it’s crucial to remember that forming this father-child bond will happen, though you have to be willing to put in the time via interaction," Anna told FEMAIL. "The more input there is on your behalf, the quicker that a bond can form."

Fathers should play a more active role in the child's development. Here are a few tips that can help dads to bond with their child by Dr. Machin, as reported by FEMAIL.

1.Fundamental foundation to build a relationship: Making eye contact, touching and stroking your baby helps release chemical that can help the two of you form a bond. Learning to understand your baby is the basis of attachment to help build a relationship.

2. Communication is key: There are two ways to initiate communication -

* Baby massage: It gives dads an Oxytocin hit, which is a chemical that can help with bonding.
* Sing, read and talk to your child: It will help get used to your touch and identify your voice.

3. Keep at it: Some days could be more challenging than others, but don't give up. While books provide valuable information on this subject, it is also important to listen and trust your instincts to learn what your baby needs.
