Bariatric surgery did not help ex-TD leader fight woes

Srinivas Reddy was suffering from lung infection and was a diabetic, he died of a heart stroke.

Hyderabad: Singireddy Srinivas Reddy, a former TD floor leader of the GHMC Council and a close associate of late N.T. Rama Rao’s family, died of a massive heart stroke at a private hospital in the early hours of Wednesday.

He was suffering from a lung infection and was a diabetic. He had undergone bariatric surgery to resolve weight related complications, but it had not helped.

His nephew Vignan Reddy said, “He suffered a massive heart stroke on Wednesday morning. My uncle was admitted to the ICU over 15 days ago. He was suffering from a lung infection which had spread to his blood. Both his kidneys had failed and he had been on dialysis for years.”

He said that Srinivas Reddy had weighed 120 kg when he had undergone the bariatric surgery. Though the surgery helped reduce his weight, it had not resolved his medical complications.

From the beginning of his political career, Srinivas Reddy had been a close aide to NTR’s son Nandamuri Harikrishna. When Harikrishna launched the Anna Telugu Desam, which no longer exists, Srinivas Reddy headed the Hyderabad division.

Srinivas Reddy contested the 2009 GHMC polls from Saidabad on a TD ticket. Upon election, his name popped up as a probable candidate for the post of Mayor. However, he was not appointed because the TD did not win a majority in that election.

He was the TD’s floor leader while B. Karthika Reddy from the Congress and Mohammed Majid Hussain from the MIM shared mayoralty.

In 2016, the Saidabad seat was reserved for women. Srinivas Reddy’s wife Swarnalatha contested the election and won.

Srinivas Reddy moved to the TRS party that year. Sources say that he was associated with a few gangsters and that he helped the police, in some cases by acting as an informant.

His name was among the three corporators on the hit list of the terror module busted by the Karnataka police in 2012. The two other names were Raja Singh and K. Sahadev Yadav of the BJP.
