For a healthy heart, keep blood pressure in check

Of late Sakra Hospital has been witnessing a rise in young patients with high blood pressure issues.

Bengaluru: If a person has blood pressure, every system gets overworked and exhausted and ages faster, said Dr Adil Sadiq, Senior Consultant and Head Adult Cardiac Surgery, Sakra World Hospital. “The simplest analogy would be driving a Mercedez Benz car in first gear,” he quipped.

He explained that blood pressure was one of the precursors to cardio-vascular diseases and if a young person gets it the effect is more profound than to an elderly person.

Of late Sakra Hospital has been witnessing a rise in young patients with high blood pressure issues. "The average age that we see is around 30 years; both men and women, with surprisingly high blood pressure," Dr Adil added.

According to the World Health Organisation, Hypertension affects around 1.13 billion people worldwide. Uncontrolled hypertension is one of the leading causes for diseases such heart attack, stroke, dementia and kidney failure.

"Public awareness of hypertension is essential as it is a silent killer. It increases the tendency for stroke and heart attacks," said Dr Jai Babu, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Narayana Multispecialty Hospital, Whitefield.

The normal blood pressure reading should be 120/80 mmHg, but it fluctuates and can increase with age. However, even at the age of 60, one should maintain their blood pressure below 150/90 mmHg.
