Hyderabad: Gynecological issues, especially cases pertaining to PCOD and infertility, have mounted by almost three times ever since nationwide lockdown was clamped.
Doctors and physicians opine that those suffering from these ailments should be given appropriate treatment on a priority basis.
Almost 100 patients are visiting the gynecology outpatient wing at Government Nizamia Unani Hospital in Charminar almost every day.
Dr Shazadi Sultana, HOD of gynecological department, said, “the cases have increased threefold. Most of them have been because of stress, inadequate sleep or a bad sleep pattern, bad food habits and utter lack of physical moments.”
She added “Around 50 percent are suffering from infertility while many others are suffering from polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD), pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB). Thankfully, most of the patients have been cured successfully. In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) has helped many women in their 40s conceive. Those who could not despite various medications approached us. Here it is free of cost.”
Dr Shahjahan Begum, gynecologist, (Unani), said “PCOD cases that have risen are largely due to haphazard lifestyle and psychological stress. PCOD can lead to infertility.”
“Of late, girls who reach puberty are complaining of PCOD, within two or three months. The main cause of PCOD is junk food. Unani has helped cure 99 per cent of patients with three months of medication.”
She added “In DUB cases, mensural periods are twice or thrice in a month, implying that they near to menopause. The patient becomes anemic. Unlike Hysterectomy or HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy), which have side-effects, we provide safer treatment.”
Dr Shahjahan Begum said “PID happens because of unhygienic living conditions. Fibroids are caused because of hormonal imbalance, particularly among women who marry late. Unani practitioners discourage hysterectomies (which is a surgery to remove the uterus). It has its own proven medication.”
