Researchers have found that chlamydia drastically increases risk of ovarian cancer in women, the Daily Mail reported.

The new study is the first to discover the complications linked to a common sexually transmitted disease (STD).

The team came to their conclusion after examining more than a thousand women from the US and Poland, with the goal of understanding whether treating the STD early could reduce the risk.

"Our data is lending support for there being a role of pelvic inflammatory disease in ovarian cancer and the prime cause of pelvic inflammatory disease, particularly in the US, is chlamydia infection," lead author Britton Trabert, of the National Cancer Institute, is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

Adding, "We are seeing a doubling in ovarian cancer risk with a prior history of pelvic inflammatory disease."

The findings will be presented in April at a conference for the American Association for Cancer Research.

Ovarian cancer is difficult to detect. Here are some of the symptoms:

*Bloating
* Constipation
* Fatigue
* Cramps
