Chennai: Diabetes in women is different, difficult and often dismissed and an important type of diabetes, Gestational diabetes, i.e. diabetes during pregnancy remains a problem in one out of every two Indian women. Gestational diabetes has risen nearly fourfold in past 20 years and has very profound consequences, say experts.
“International Diabetes Federation theme on world diabetes day being adwomen and Diabetes, we intend to leverage this golden opportunity to raise awareness and empower women with knowledge and the necessary tools. We would like to educate girls and women about the myths, misconceptions, facts, figures, dos and don'ts of diabetes care and focus on prevention,” said Dr. Usha Sriram, founder, DIWWAAAS at an awareness seminar, 'Women and diabetes — Our right to a healthy future'. The seminar on account of 'World Diabetes Day' was inaugurated by health secretary Dr J.Radhakrishnan.
“Increase in diabetes incidences is due to urbanization and globalization and balancing traditional and non-traditional roles and stresses of modern living. Genetics, consumption of unhealthy food, physical inactivity, obesity, poverty, care giving and gender disparities are other important contributing factors,” she added.
