Walk! Beat diabetes, save your eyes
Bengaluru: Thousands of college students from the top city colleges participated in the diabetes walkathon organised by the Regal Hospital in the city on Sunday to create awareness about diabetes.
The city joined hands to increase awareness about Diabetes on Monday, World Diabetes Day, through various awareness events. A paper published in the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism gives us the areas of highest occurrence: 17.93 cases/100,000 children in Karnataka, 3.2 cases/100,000 children in Chennai, and 10.2 cases/100,000 children in Karnal (Haryana). The World Health Organisation also estimates that 111,500 children live with type 1diabetes around the world.
“The numbers are not encouraging, but there is a silver lining—that diabetes management is possible, no matter how young the child. It’s also good to know that in the long run, these children live, thrive, and lead happy, productive lives, eating healthy, exercising, and leading a long life. For parents, it may initially take a little getting used to, but a parent’s attitude, supported by the rest of the family, can help children take type 1 in their stride,” says Dr P Raghupathy, Senior Paediatric Endocrinologist, Sagar Hospital, Bangalore.
British Biologicals, India’s largest Nutraceutical Company, is organizing a Walkathon rally on November 14th, on ‘World Diabetes Day 2016’. The walkathon is scheduled at MG Road to convey the year’s theme, ‘Eyes on Diabetes’. On this day, the company has organized a social awareness program on the rise in Diabetes and its staggering burden and consequences.
