Suicidal man branded 'alien' for rare lip birthmark gets life-changing surgery
A Scottish man born who was a victim of bullying for having a facial deformity has finally had corrective surgery.
"You look like an alien" and "sausage face" are just some of the insults 23-year-old Rory McGuire had to endure for having a rare birthmark, called venous malformation, which is on his upper lip, according to Daily Mail.
Venous malformation (VM) is an abnormality of the larger, deep vessels, according to NOVA. While VM is present at birth, it will only be visible, as the child gets older. They are often found in the tongue, cheeks, lips and jaw and continue to grow. A procedure called sclerotherapy can treat VM, which shuts the blood supply to the vessels affected.
The taunting became so bad that he wanted to commit suicide as a teenager. McGuire wanted the pain from the comments to stop and felt " dying wouldn't be a bad option".
However, after undergoing a total of 16 surgeries to correct his deformity, McGuire hopes he never has to hear the nasty comments anymore. He shared his his transformation thanks to the life-changing surgery on Twitter to raise awareness about his condition and give hope to others in his situation. "I am happy for the first time in my life," he told the Daily Mail.
