When Gen-Y gets gymnasty

Many youngsters who are working out to lose weight, tend to go overboard with their exercise regime.

Every day, there are new gyms offering new-age routines popping up across the city. Many city youngsters looking to shed those few extra kilos are flocking to these hubs of fitness. Being a generation that wants everything instantly, the millennials expect to get results immediately, and so they tend to go overboard with their training, which can cause serious injury to their body, and also affect their health. We talk to city-based gym fanatics and find out some of the consequences when beginners go overboard and also a few tips for beginners. Achieving the desired results within days is not possible and so when joining a gym one must have the patience. City-based entrepreneur Sriram Parameshwar says, “I have seen youngsters sometimes go all out or they quit as they are not satisfied with the results that have been promised to them.

Hence they tend to go overboard and cause serious injury to themselves, and in extreme cases, even death. While working out, one needs to be patient and wait for results. Choosing fast track methods like steroids and supplements is not the way to go. When a person starts a regime, it is advisable that they do one week of warm up exercises/ stretching and cardio.”

A solid base is required for any beginners who do body building or strength training. City-based entrepreneur Zoheb Sultan says, “Going overboard with workouts is strongly not recommended as it will affect bone health, problem in joint areas etc. Beginners should not focus only on body building but also on strength training. I have seen newbies who get into the habit of taking health supplements without awareness which leads to various health problems.”

Software developer and fitness freak, Prashant Bhargava says, “Beginners who are joining gyms should have the mindset that this is long term process. I think identifying that is very important. I would suggest that when people start working out, they should have a balance between all kinds of workouts, exercises like cardio, weight lifting etc. Weight lifting can be started with small weights and then one can move on to bigger weights. In the world of fitness, workouts and diet go hand in hand, more training doesn’t necessarily mean faster results.”

Local gym trainer Lohith Nanjappa says, “The youth lack patience when it comes to starting their fitness journeys. With the massive boom that is happening in the fitness industry and gyms opening in every lane, youngsters seem to be in a hurry to get results. This lead to them going all out with their training, leading to serious injury and inflammation at a young age. I advice youngsters to set realistic and long term goals, prioritise healthy eating and hydration to do better at gym, workouts should not be for than 45-60 minutes a day.”
