Doctor allegedly encourages woman to have more sex to treat bipolar disorder
A woman claims that a doctor prescribed orgasms to help treat her bipolar disorder, the Metro reported.
The woman, given the name Penny Sullivan, was told to have "as much sex as she could handle" as a way of stabilising her depression and low moods, the report revealed.
When she started having a lot more sex than usual with her husband, her mood started to improve.
"We don’t always have to have intercourse either, simply touching, cuddling or just fooling around and being connected can be just as great to get those feel goods," she told whimn.com.au.
Semen reportedly contains anti-depressant properties and orgasm release hormone that can help improve one's mood.
The Metro quotes Sexologist Isiah McKimmie: “Sex elevates our mood through the release of hormones and endorphins it causes in our brain.”
Adding, "It increases oxytocin (a love and bonding hormone,) serotonin (a happiness hormone) and dopamine levels. These help us experience feelings of love, connection and happiness.
"Additionally, semen contains mild anti-depressant compounds. Women who have unprotected sex with their partners have been shown to have elevated moods compared to women who always or mostly use condoms," he further went on to explain.
Doctors in Australia had diagnosed Sullivan with bipolar disorder and advised her to put an end to her drinking and start exercising.
