Autism Spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopment issue that affects the proper development of the foetus. These kids find it challenging to perform simple tasks and struggle to lead an independent life. They need the support of the parents and siblings for even the most basic functions like walking, eating and taking care of their needs. This affects the quality of life of the patients and the family largely.

Though there is no remedy for the disease, various methodologies can help them to lead a healthy life. There are multiple stages and types of Autism disorder. Non-Verbal Autism is a type of ASD that can be quite challenging to handle. The children affected by this disorder do not develop the ability to communicate with any functional language. Children with special needs take longer to speak than others.

However, kids with non-verbal Autism do not speak at all or do not talk more than a few incomprehensible syllables. Dr Yoosuf Mohd, Centre Head, Mom’s Belief Empowering kids highlights what causes this disorder, what are the early signs, how it can be diagnosed and how it parents can deal with such a situation.

What are the symptoms of Non-Verbal Autism?

Parents with special children should familiarise themselves with the symptoms of Non-Verbal Autism. Sometimes, children take longer to speak due to various reasons. However, the symptoms of this disorder are different because they attempt to communicate, but the mouth does not receive the appropriate signals. The symptoms can be of social, behavioural and developmental nature.

What causes this disorder?

The causes of ASD and Non-Verbal Autism are quite similar. Some of the common causes include older parents, toxic exposure, genetic traits, premature birth, metabolic imbalance, etc. The disease can be caused due to apraxia of speech meaning delay in communication between the brain and the talking muscles. Sometimes, the children might also repeat the same words repeatedly, and the condition is known as echolalia.

What are the early signs?

Parents with differently-abled kids should look for these early signs to seek immediate medical help. There are certain milestones which the children are expected to reach a certain age. Children should begin to babble and laugh on their first birthday. They should try communicating through sounds and actions. It is prudent to consult the doctor if the kid does not do these activities.

How can it be diagnosed?

There are various diagnostic tools to identify the disorder. However, it takes multiple-phase analysis to determine it. The doctors would do a physical exam, blood analysis and imaging tests to understand the severity of the condition. The health care team will analyse the complete medical history and recommend Autism specific tests.

How can parents handle the issue?

Parents need counselling and guidance to handle the needs of special kids. The primary step would be to identify the severity of the issue. This would help them to formulate the right action plan. The next step would be to establish a communication channel with the children. This can be through hand signals and eye movements. They should be patient and firm while encouraging their child to speak and communicate.

Studies reveal that parents should encourage their children with special needs before the age of five. It becomes difficult for them to adapt the ability beyond that age and that there is a minimal chance of speaking.  The children might feel restless and agitated when they do not have the ability to communicate. It might also be challenging for the parents and family to understand their needs. It is crucial to diagnose it early and seek necessary medical attention. The disorder can be handled with proper guidance and support from the experts.
