Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Society, AIG Hospital Celebrate World Blood Donors Day

HYDERABAD: Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Society (TSCS) along with Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG) Hospitals today celebrated ‘World Blood Donors Day’ and honoured selfless blood donors at their premises. A special blood donation camp was also organized as part of AIG’s ‘Pint of Life’ Campaign in which more than 500 units of blood were collected for children suffering with Thalassemia. The collected blood is being donated to TSCS.

About 300 million people are affected with Thalassemia globally. About 500000 have a severe form of the condition. These patients need lifelong management including blood transfusions. With an unwavering commitment towards thalassemia, TSCS has organized 2870 Blood Donation Camps and provided life-saving blood transfusions to 2,28,500 Thalassemia patients. Furthermore, TSCS is aggressively working towards the prevention of Thalassemia, highlighting a comprehensive approach to tackling this genetic disorder.

Speaking at the occasion Dr. Chadrakant Agarwal, President - Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Society said “On this World Blood Donors Day, we would like to thank each and every donor, who came forward to save lives of Thalassemia patients. We also want to extend our gratitude to AIG Hospitals for organising this special blood donation camp and helping TSCS with the units collected today. Such momentous occasions allow TSCS to reflect on the extraordinary strides made in the field of blood donation, a noble act of selflessness that saves lives and instils hope in those in need. Our nation has a long-standing history of generosity and humanitarian values, and we can now proudly declare that we have achieved unparalleled success in this domain. Through the visionary collective efforts of TSCS, noble institutions like AIG Hospitals and countless individuals, our country stands as a shining example of excellence in blood donation, setting new benchmarks for compassion and generosity. At TSCS we always encourage people who donate blood as one donor saves 3 lives of the patients. We also want to request everyone to come forward and donate blood which could save millions of lives.”

“TSCS have witnessed a remarkable increase in the number of voluntary blood donors, ensuring a sustainable supply that saves lives every single day. However, it is crucial to remember that this revolution is not limited to TSCS or a handful of individuals; it is the result of the collective efforts of countless donors, volunteers, healthcare professionals, and blood donor organizations who have worked tirelessly to make a difference. Each one of us is an integral part of this revolution. Your willingness to donate, your commitment to raising awareness, and your dedication to helping others have made this transformation possible,” added Dr. Chandrakant Agarwal.

Dr. Nageshwar Reddy, Chairman - AIG was extremely impressed & has promised that they will now regularly donate blood to TSCS and will help in many other ways. Especially they promised to do BMT for our Thalassemia children.
