Woman eats first meal in two years due to surgery gone wrong

The procedure triggered a range of health issues.

When Emma Green was just 15-years-old she had to have an operation to correct her S-shaped spine that was caused by scoliosis. While the procedure was a success, it triggered a range of health issues. One of them was being unable to consume foods.

The 29-year-old's abnormally shaped back was caused by Ehlers Danlos syndrome, “a condition that affects connective tissue”, according to the Daily Mail. This can often cause hypertension andthrombosis. However, in Green’s case it caused pain and numbness. The discomfort from the condition forced her to rely on a wheelchair.

Her body also rejected her attempts to eat and caused her to get sick and have diarrhoea. To help correct the issue, Green travelled in May to have a £25,000 operation in. Six days after the surgery she was able to eat. Her first meal after two years was a bowl of Kelloggs Rice Krispies.

"My tastes before the operation were completely off but after the surgery I could enjoy food again. I can't wait to try more foods and enjoy eating," Green told the Daily Mail. She also revealed she is "enjoying her second chance at life".
