'Pledge to pedal' campaign aims to enable a healthier future

According to a study, people in India who walk or cycle to work are less likely to be obese, have diabetes or high blood pressure.

New Delhi: To be fit and healthy you need to be physically active. Regular physical activity can protect you from serious diseases such as obesity, heart disease, cancer, mental illness, diabetes and arthritis. Cycling is an active, low-impact exercise that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, from youngsters to older adults. It is also cheap and good for the environment.

'Pledge to pedal' was such an initiative of Firefox bikes towards the same ideology. Promoting health over technology, the campaign was a hit on the Television. Firefox bikes teamed up with India Today TV to encourage a healthier lifestyle for everyone.

The campaign broadly focused on promoting cycling to work and elsewhere by creating awareness about cycling avoids pollution, is good for muscles, knees, ankles and is the best exercise for weight loss and over all immune system.

Mr. Shiv Inder Singh, CEO, Firefox Bikes said, "Riding a bike is great for toning and building your muscles. It's also a great low-impact mode of exercise for those with joint conditions. Cycling on a regular basis is the key to a healthy life. We associated with India Today TV and took the opportunity to educate everyone about the benefits of cycling."

He added, "According to a study, people in India who walk or cycle to work are less likely to be overweight or obese, have diabetes or high blood pressure. Half of people who commute to work by private transport and 38 per cent who took public transport were overweight, compared with only a quarter of people who walked or cycled to work."

Cycling is the most energy efficient urban transport mode with a high potential to reduce energy consumption and to enhance the livability of our cities. However, most of this potential still has to be activated. In the countries like Netherlands and Demark, Cycling is already a 'healthier' transport mode. It can also become a high impact measure to foster energy-efficient transport patterns in India where there is no real cycling culture.

Firefox Bikes, with this campaign, contributes to effectively activate this potential of energy efficient transport. It aimed at improving public health by promoting physical activity. It also aims to improve energy efficiency, reduce CO2 emissions and air pollution by increasing the modal share of cycling.

Changing people's minds towards a real cycle culture is a real change and the 'Pledge to Pedal' can also encourage cycling among "sleeping" target groups, which usually would not cycle, they include elderly, business people and people seeking comfort. So, start paddling to a healthier and pollution free future before the circumstances worsen for the people and environment.
