Cerebral artery bulging can lead to stroke

In India more than 10 million people suffer from brain aneurysms every year.

Hyderabad: Bulging of the cerebral artery in the brain is one of the common reasons of stroke. Eight to 10 out of 1 lakh persons suffer from a rupture of the aneurysm.

In India more than 10 million people suffer from brain aneurysms every year.

The symptoms of ruptured aneurysm where the blood vessel has burst and the blood has spread inside the skull is sudden headache and altered senses.

Dr Sharath Kumar G., senior interventional neuroradiologist, said, “Our efforts have been to find the unruptured aneurysms which will help to begin early treatment and save the patient.”

With a lot of patients undergoing CT scans and MRIs, there is a possibility of early detection and treatment.

Dr Radha K. Rao, senior neurologist, said, “There are specific clinical trials which are being carried out for treating brain aneurysms. The success of these trials will be a game changer.”

Aneurysm is caused due to uncontrolled high blood pressure, trauma, abnormal flow of blood to the tips and junctions of the body and brain and infections in the artery wall.

“Those who suffer from frequent exploding types of headache where their eye sight is affected, there is stiffness in the neck and a tingling sensation in their facial muscles must get themselves checked,” said neurologist Dr Abhilash Metta.

He said it takes four to five weeks for bulged arteries to burst and that is the best time to arrest the disease.

“Often the patients are not identified in time and suffer severe stroke,” he said.

Patients also suffer from feeling of weakness in limbs, blurry or double vision and extreme tiredness are some of the symptoms that the body gives of this condition. Early non-surgical intervention to arrest brain aneurysm is being explored but the problem is that many of them are not aware and they come to the hospital in near fatal conditions.
