London: Cancer surgeon Manu Nair has been accused of treating patients for prostate cancer when they did not even have the disease, the Daily Mail has reported. The celebrity surgeon who appeared in Channel 4's Embarrassing Bodies is being sued by 57 male patients after he allegedly left some infertile.

According to the Mail one of the men has claimed that Nair 'cooked' his prostate gland after “zapping him with a controversial laser treatment”. Others were allegedly given a laser treatment known as High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HFIU) which has not been approved by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE). Dozens of patients are now suing Nair claiming that they suffered serious health problems following treatment by the surgeon, the Daily Mail has said.

Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham and Spire Parkway private hospital in Solihull, West Midlands - where Nair previously worked — have written to many of the patients informing them that a number of Nair's practices had been reviewed. Nair is also being investigated by the General Medical Council (GMC) and is subject to nine different restrictions — including that he cannot work in private practice.
