Zinc deficiency a cause too

Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) patients are also asked to raise their zinc levels for the same reason,Gynaecologist says.

Hyderabad: With infertility cases on the rise nationwide, doctors say zinc deficiency is an important contributing factor, which is why supplemental zinc is important. A recent study at Pennsylvania State University has found that zinc deficiency can negatively affect the early stages of egg development, reducing the ability of egg cells to divide and be fertilised. The importance of zinc in oocyte was discussed in the study.

Gynaecologist Rajashree Nambiar says, “Zinc deficiency causes small egg development, which eventually disrupts. It is alarming to note the number of women who suffer from zinc deficiency because zinc is crucial for utilising reproductive hormones, oestrogen, and progesterone. A deficiency can lead to hormone imbalance, abnormal ovarian development, and menstrual irregularity, which can all cause infertility. Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) patients are also asked to raise their zinc levels for the same reason.”

Prenatal vitamins should be taken regularly, and zinc requirements increase during pregnancy as it helps the development of the foetus.

Zinc supplements should especially be taken by vegans or vegetarians, as they have been noted to have particularly low levels.
