Woman with Sleeping Beauty Syndrome has trouble staying awake

Kleine-Levin syndrome causes those affected to sleep excessively, alters behaviour and have a different understanding of the world.

A 22-year-old British woman has a rare neurological disorder that causes her to sleep so much that she finds it nearly impossible to wake up. Beth Goodier’s mother claims that she has been asleep 75 per cent of the time since she was first afflicted by the Kleine-Levin syndrome (KLS) five years ago.

KLS, also known as Sleeping Beauty syndrome, causes those affected to sleep excessively, alters behaviour and have a different understanding of the world. It is usually seen in teens but can also affect children or adults.

Beth’s mother Janine says, “It is like night and day. She might wake up tomorrow and then it's a race against time to live the life she should have had. She rushes off to catch up with her friends and get her hair done. But no one knows when she might fall asleep again,” reports the Daily Mail.
