Pay attention to your kidneys, it's World Kidney Day today

Bedwetting can be since birth or if the problem recurs after the child had stopped bedwetting for some time.

New Delhi: Founded in 2006, World Kidney Day is a global health awareness campaign focusing on the importance of the kidneys and reducing the frequency and impact of health problems associated with them worldwide.

And on this day, when the world is focusing towards one of the most important part of human body, Dr. Sonia Sharma, Consultant Pediatric Nephrologist, PSRI Hospital, is spreading awareness about the diseases related to the kidneys.

Talking about Kidney diseases and their symptoms, Dr. Sonia says, "Bedwetting (five years or older) can be since birth or if the problem recurs after the child had stopped bedwetting for some time. Crying during urination (in infants) and Painful urination (in older kids) are some of the symptoms."

"Other symptoms include unpleasant-smelling urine, unexplained low-grade fever or recurrent fever episodes, urine that is cloudy, bloody or dark brown, persistent abdominal pain, childhood renal stones, frequent severe headaches and high blood pressure," she added.

Further, Dr. Sonia also said that there are three types of very common kidney diseases - urinary tract infections (UTI), acute kidney disease (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Talking about prevention of these disease, Dr. Sonia said, "Healthy lifestyle in children to prevent kidney diseases include good intake of water is suggested to the children for proper functioning of kidney, salt should be included in a normal or low amount, protein intake should be in adequate amount. Taking more of protein is not suggested, if there is a family history of stone, then there should be a screening of children also for detection."

If someone is already suffering from Acute or Chronic Kidney Injury, then canned or packed fruit juices that have high level of potassium in them, apples, mangoes, grapes, bananas and all the oily food items that can increase the level of cholesterol should be avoided.

So, on this World Kidney Day, take a healthier step for your kidneys.
