Thiruvananthapuram turns nation's breast cancer capital: Experts

Experts said breast cancer could be detected at an early stage and treated.

Thiruvananthapuram: Incidence of cancer is shooting up at an alarming rate in the state with Thiruvananthapuram emerging as the nation’s breast cancer Capital, recording the higher incidence rate of 40 per 1 lakh women as per the latest estimation of population breast cancer Registry for Thiruvananthapuram at the RCC, said experts here. At the fifth International Radiology day celebrations held at RCC on Tuesday, they said about 9 lakh women were diagnosed with breast cancer every year.

Breast cancer was the second most common malignancy next to cervix cancer in the country with annual incidence of 20 per 1 lakh population and 40 per 1 lakh population in Kerala, said Dr. Pradeep S leading radiologic, during his presidential address at the meet. He said 50 percent of the breast cancer was occurring in people less than 50 years of age. “Breast cancer is the theme of the day, it is the most common malignancy affecting one million women worldwide and it constitute about 21 percent of all cancer with 5,19,000 annual death, he added. Experts said breast cancer could be detected at an early stage and treated. The Radiology had a great role to play but the common people were still ignorant about it, they added.
