The issue of mental health is one which is often ignored in our society despite a WHO study in 2014 that claimed that India has the highest number of suicides in the world. Since the patriarchy generally encourages a toxic version of masculinity, mental illness among men is not taken seriously.
Most boys and men are hesitant to seek out help as they feel that talking about their vulnerabilities would emasculate them. This leads them to use addictive substances like alcohol and contraband drugs to cope with their negative feelings instead of seeking out professional medical help.
