Keto diet not safe for all, say experts
Hyderabad: A ketogenic diet is not safe for all. It is recommended to patients who suffer from epilepsy, but should be practiced under the guidance of doctors, says the department of nutrition in a Harvard Health Letter.
While taking up the ketogenic diet is a fad among celebrities as well as those who are trying to reduce weight, it is found that the results are only short-term and in the long run, it is not safe.
Ketogenic diets are low in carbohydrates and high in protein, forcing the body to burn fat for energy. Ketones are produced in the liver which stores fat. Burning fat in this manner shows instant results and hence it has become very popular.
Dr Zeenath Fatima, a consultant nutritionist, said, “Researches have shown only short-term benefits with a ketogenic diet. In the long term it poses higher risk of kidney stones, osteoporosis and increased levels of uric acid in the blood which may lead to gout.”
A ketogenic diet may be an option for people who have difficulty in losing weight. But the exact ratio of fat, carbohydrate and protein required varies from person to person due to their genetic make-up and body composition.
Dr G. Hari Kishan said, “Following fads blindly is not recommended. Diet plans must be taken up on the advice of a nutritionist and after proper evaluation by a physician. When this is done, the damage to the body is immediately identified and there are measures to control the same.”
The department of nutrition issued the Harvard Health Letter after detecting the trend of more people following new fads in diets which ultimately sends them to the hospital.
According to Dr Janaki Srinath, a senior nutritionist, “The problem is that people follow fads without knowing what their body actually requires. The scientific method is setting small targets in terms of weight loss as its impact lasts long. Quick methods show quick results but the effect is not long-lasting. People look for quick results and end up harming themselves.”
Experts are of the opinion that weight loss is a long process and it requires following the regime strictly, making modifications in lifestyle and ensuring sufficient physical activity to keep the body fit and healthy.
