Scientists discover drug that can soothe a woman's broken heart

They did not find it to have the same effect on men.

A new study has discovered a painkiller can help soothe a broken heart, the Daily Mail reported.

However, the drug called ibuprofen only has an effect on women.

For the study, volunteers played a virtual game of "catch". When others stopped throwing a ball to them. Some of them wrote about someone close that had betrayed them.

Those who took the drug were found to experience less social pain.

University of California researchers feel the drug "blunts female sensitivities but disrupts the male urge to suppress emotional pain", the report stated.

Lead author of the study Dr Kyle Ratner feels this is an "alarming" find because consumers are unaware of the psychological impact of these drugs.

The findings were published in the journal Policy Insights from the Behavioural and Brain Sciences.
