Why chicken soup is best for treating a cold
Whenever you are sick, you will often be advised to have a nice warn chicken soup.
Now a new study has found that it really is the best remedy to cure your pesky cold, the Daily Mail reported.
University of Nebraska researchers put to test a recipe called 'grandma soup', the report revealed.
Study author Dr Stephen Rennard analysed three batches of the chicken soup which included chicken, onions, sweet potatoes, parsnips, turnips, carrots, celery stems, parsley, salt and pepper.
His goal was to understand how neutrophils, the most common white cell in the blood would be able to block or reduce the virus with the help of the soup.
Researchers believe reducing the movement of neutrophils could help steady the activity in the area that causes symptoms of the flu.
The results revealed just that and showed the chicken soup could have anti-inflammatory components and ease the symptoms of respiratory infection.
When consuming the soup during a cold, the soup's aroma, spices and heat could help clear up all that congestion.
The comfort the soup brings to the state of mind and body may also have a placebo effect, Dr Stephen Rennard feels, according to the Daily Mail.
While the exact ingredients in the soup that holds such healing properties is not yet known, researchers believe it is the combination of these different ingredients that may be key.
