Experts reveal some dietary supplements linked to cancer, diarrhoea

Their benefits for the general population is still unknown, according to experts.

Experts reveal taking daily vitamins could be a mistake, the Daily Mail reported.

Often dietary supplements are perceived as being a quick fix to a host of problems.

While vitamins do make up for deficiencies in older people and pregnant women, their benefits for the rest of the population is still unknown.

"In general populations, vitamin supplements have never been shown to be of any benefit," Dr JoAnn Manson, a Harvard professor and the Brigham and Women's chief of preventative medicine, told the Daily Mail.

Currently, there are close to 90,000 vitamin and dietary supplements on the US market. Vitamin supplements have become increasingly popular despite studies exposing its link to serious health issues.

"There is the issue of people spending money day in, day out, on these supplements and spending time, so they may become more complacent about the importance of a heart-healthy diet and lifestyle modifications like physical exercise," Dr Manson told the Daily Mail.

According to the Daily Mail report, here are the some of the risks people should be aware of:

* Vitamin E could increase risk of a cancer

* Poisoning from Vitamin A could be lethal

* You could suffer gastrointestinal system issues from Vitamin C and calcium

* You could be taking a risk mixing and vitamins with medicines
