Major Spine relief for Omani girl
KOCHI: Doctors in the city have performed a complex spine surgery for scoliosis correction on a 12-year-old girl from Oman. A team led by Dr. Krishnakumar R, Consultant Spine and Scoliosis Surgeon, at VPS Lakeshore, straightened a curve of 90 degree on the spine by performing the corrective surgery. The patient, Mariyam, hailing from Sur in Oman, was diagnosed with scoliosis, a condition in which the spine bends sideways associated with protrusion of the rib cage, two years ago.
Although she had undergone various treatments in Oman, the spine continued to bend resulting in crude appearance. The patient had also started developing breathlessness while running and playing. “The patient’s spine was so much bent that it started compressing her lung, which in turn led to breathlessness,” said Dr Krishna Kumar. He added that the patient was successfully operated with the advanced spinal implant systems with titanium screws and cobalt-chrome rods to straighten the 90 degrees bend.
