Hyderabad ranks 6th in prevalence of diabetes
Hyderabad: Hyderabad ranks sixth in the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India survey carried out in the prevalence of diabetes. It was found that 22 per cent of the patients in both Telangana and AP suffer from diabetes.
Endocrinologist Dr Bipin Kumar Sethi said the major problem seen in Indian patients was the Asian Indian phenotype where the person is obese around the waist.
“The waist to hip ratio has a greater degree of central obesity. When that happens there will be less adiponectin (protective hormone) but more of fatty acids in circulation. Increased levels of fatty acid will lead to decrease in pancreatic capacity to produce insulin and control sugars,” Dr Sethi said.
Under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke, 20 lakh people were checked for diabetes and hypertension in the districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Krishna, Prakasam, Nellore, Chittoor, Kadapa and Kurnool.
The prevalence of diabetes was seen at 7.29; Nellore district topped with 11.71 per cent. in prevalence of diabetes at 19 per cent.
Experts said the major problem in dealing with diabetic patients was their reluctance to opt of regular medical checks and suspicions about the doctor’s observations.
