Pre-conception care vital for healthy childbirth, say doctors

But various diseases affect around 4-5 million pregnant women every year now.

Chennai: A large number of non-communicable diseases affect women during pregnancy as pre-conception care is still missing in case of maternity care. To highlight such issues related to maternal health, Asian Research and Training Institute for Skill Transfer (Artist) organises developed preconception care centre for preconception care.

Dr Hema Divakar, chairperson, Artist, said, “Women kept away many diseases during pregnancy by abiding by a healthy lifestyle, quality diet and adopting ample physical activity by default in living pattern two decades ago. But various diseases affect around 4-5 million pregnant women every year now.”

She added that pre-conception care becomes important in such scenarios as an alarming proportion of children born to these mothers are succumbing to childhood obesity and early onset adult diabetes.

Therefore, pre-conception care centres have been initialised to maximise preventive care and address various women’s health issues much earlier in life.

These centres will be available through mobile apps wherein women or couple planning for pregnancy can answer a few questions, thereby assisting the healthcare provider in charting an appropriate health care programme for her to be followed before, during and after pregnancy.
