Centre, Tamil Nadu drove Anitha to suicide: Top psychiatrist

Dr Nambi regretted that there were not enough trained psychiatrists in Tamil Nadu.

Chennai: Acute depression due to disappointment of failure though not on her part, drove the student Anitha to end her life suddenly, says renowned Chennai psychiatrist Dr. S. Nambi who blames the Central and State governments for leading to the crisis.

“She is a motherless child, her father is a labourer working somewhere and even if she is depressed she was suffering in silence for three four days. Her’s is a case of acute depression due to disappointment – you cannot call it a failure on her part, as she didn’t fail. Its abetment of suicide rather than suicide. They forced her to die. Last one or two months she was mildly depressed and lost her hopes because of the confusion created by the Central and State governments. So, the mild depression became acute in last phase. She couldn’t tolerate it and there was no one to listen,” Dr Nambi said

Her crisis, he said, did not arise out of her loss or failure but it was a miserable failure on the part of the governments. “The situation is different here. She must have been suffering for three four days. And there was nobody in the hamlet who notice it. If somebody was there to ventilate her emotions through words, then, this would have ensured her great relief.

As there was nobody around to console her, she resorted to this mode of action,” he said explaining what could have transpired in her mind.

“Intelligence and emotional feelings are two different things. Most of the suicides in the educational institutions in India occur only in the creamy layer of students in premier institutes. They are very bright, very genius but the suicide rate there is high. This problem may not be similar in an ordinary arts college in a village… people foolishly say she does not have the courage to face. She had the courage to face everything but she went out of human control. It is not a suicide. She was forced to die — what you call abetment of suicide under 306 of IPC… people have forced her to die,” he said.
