VIJAYAWADA: One of the heaviest teens on the planet, Suman Khatun who weighs 185 kg, underwent a successful Bariatric surgery free of cost, said Dr K. Ravikanth of Endocare Hospital here on Thursday. The patient tried to get rid of obesity by decreasing weight in several hospitals in metro cities such as New Delhi and Mumbai but in vain. Hence, the parents of the Suman came to Vijayawada a month ago for the treatment of the fattest girl's problem.
Addressing the media persons the Dr K Ravikanth said that the 14-year girl Suman Khatun was suffering from obesity problem since her childhood due to leptin hormone deficiency. Dr. Ravikanth said that through the internet and discovery channel they could know about their Vijayawada based hospital and came for treatment. Dr Ravikanth said that the parents Jalaluddin Khan and Shabana Katun, an agricultural labourer from Matiyala village, Bhirbum Mandal of West Bengal, approached the hospital after knowing through Internet and discovery channel about Endocare Hospital, Vijayawada.
At the hospital, Suman underwent preliminary tests and treatment was given. In the first few days, Suman lost about 10 kg. She underwent sleeve gastrectomy surgery on July 20 successfully and the weight was reduced by another 20 kg. Dr Ravikanth said that Suman has reduced by 30 kg weight in one month and was ready for discharge. The doctor said that the surgery and treatment were done free of cost. It generally costs Rs 5 lakh to Rs 6 lakh. The total cost of this girl's surgery was borne by their Bariatric Foundation, which supports children bariatric surgeries.
Dr Ravikanth said that the girl will surely lose her weight up to 80 kg in six to eight months. He also told this newspaper that she needs one more surgery for the loose skin after a year. He appealed the donors to come forward to do free surgeries for the rebirth of the obese patients as it is rising phenomenon among the present generation. Speaking to this newspaper, Suman said that she would like to study at a school now that she is normal. Earlier, she felt ashamed of students making fun as she is the fattest kid. She also thanked the doctor and staff for their commitment.
