Women can gain health benefits from drinking tea
A new study has discovered women can greatly benefit from consuming tea as it can potentially help fight cancer by epigenetic changes in the body, which is a chemical modification that turns our genes off or on.
The study was conducted by a team of research groups around Europe led by the Uppsala University in Sweden. 3,096 male and female participants were analysed to see if coffee and tea consumption may lead to epigenetic changes.
Previous research has shown that various lifestyle factors like diet, smoking or exposure to chemical can also lead to epigenetic changes
Tea consumption was associated with epigenetic changes, the team found, but only in women. The changes were found in genes involved in cancer and estrogen metabolism.
While the study did not find epigenetic changes in coffee consumers, several previous studies suggest that coffee can reduce the risk of certain cancers, most likely due to the compounds that it contains.
The study's team has noted that more research is needed to find out more about how epigenetic changes affect our health.
The study was published in the journal Human Molecular Genetics.
