One lakh get tumour every year
Hyderabad: There has been an increase of four per cent in the cases of brain tumours in the last decade with one lakh people being identified with it every year, said oncologists at the annual conference of Indian Society of Neuro-Oncology conducted by Yashoda Hospitals.
Dr Anandh Balasubramaniam, senior neurosurgeon, said, “The most disturbing fact is that brain tumours are the most common tumours in the age 1 to 19 years.”
With increased diagnostic facilities like molecular and genetic testing, tumours are being spotted up early and the treatment opted is precision chemotherapy and radiation whereby the tumour can be directly targeted.
Dr Srinivas Chilukuri, senior radiation oncologist, said, “The modern diagnostic system has helped us to identify tumours better. We need to have targeted therapies whereby damage to the other parts of the body is limited. In treating brain tumours, that is the primary care which must be exercised as the patient must continue to have a quality life after treatment.”
