Bad night's sleep could cause depressed people to consider suicide

Sleep plays a huge role when it comes to our mental well-being.

A bad night's sleep can cause people who are depressed to consider suicide, the Daily Mail reported.

Previous studies have found insomnia can make people more irritable and tense and less likely to exercise, which has been found to reduce depression.

"Sleep plays a hugely important role in our physical and mental well-being. When we sleep, our bodies recover from the physical and mental exertion of the day," study author Donna Littlewood, from the University of Manchester, told the Daily Mail.

Improving sleep quality in depressed people can help treat their condition.

"Many people with mental-health problems experience sleep problems, but sleep can be treated effectively using psychological and pharmacological interventions," Littlewood told the Daily Mail.

Adding, "This study highlights that it is important for clinicians to provide treatment for sleep problems, when working with people who experience suicidal thoughts."
