Ibuprofen effective in delaying Alzhemiers
Hyderabad: The pain killer ibuprofen has been found to have promising results when it comes to the treatment of Alzhemier’s disease. However, further research is required as the present studies and clinical evaluations are not sufficient to make any concrete conclusions. It has been found that patients above the age of 55 years, and in the high-risk category as determined by a saliva test, can be prescribed ibuprofen.
Dr Ch. Mohan Rao, consultant neuro physician at Apollo Hospitals explained, “Ibuprofen is found to delay the Alzheimer’s disease, but how it impacts the pathogenic Alzheimer’s pathway is still not clear. The drug has been perceived protecting neuro activity and is relatively safe to use. It does promise a new therapeutic avenue for the treatment of neuro degenerative diseases. Hence, more studies and clinical evaluation along those lines are being taken up.”
Scientists have found that saliva testing is a game-changer for neuro degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Dr C.K. Chowdhary, senior neuro physician explained, “Saliva tests have different bio-markers which give clarity about the different levels of the disease. But presently it is only in the controlled groups and its commercial availability for clinical testing will take time.”
