Gluten-free diet could prevent nerve pain, new study claims
A new study has discovered nerve pain could be prevented with the help of a gluten-free diet, the Daily Mail reported.
University of Sheffield researchers are hopeful a diet without a protein found in wheat and grains can prevent the painful condition.
The protein is linked with neuropathy, a nerve condition that causes pain, weakness and numbness usually in the feet and hands.
Researchers came to this conclusion after collecting data from 60 participants mostly in their 70s who had gluten neuropathy. Those who followed this diet were found to have no nerve pain.
"This study is promising because it shows that a gluten-free diet may help lower the risk of pain for people with gluten neuropathy," lead author Dr Panagiotis Zis, of the University of Sheffield, is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.
While the findings seem promising, researchers admit further research is needed to investigate whether one causes the other.
"More research is needed to confirm these results and to determine whether the gluten-free diet led to the reduction in pain," Dr Zis said.
