Sitting For Long Hours May Shrink Your Brain
Extended sitting reduces blood flow, oxygen, and nutrients to the brain, weakening cell connections and shrinking the hippocampus, which manages memory.

Prolonged sitting, whether at desk jobs or binge-watching shows, harms brain health, and daily workouts cannot fully reverse the damage.
A Vanderbilt University study tracked older adults for seven years, monitoring sitting and movement with wrist devices. Results showed that even those exercising 150 minutes weekly experienced brain shrinkage if they sat for long periods. Participants averaged 13 hours of daily sitting, linked to thinner brain areas tied to memory and Alzheimer’s disease.
Extended sitting reduces blood flow, oxygen, and nutrients to the brain, weakening cell connections and shrinking the hippocampus, which manages memory. It also increases inflammation.
The study concludes that minimising sitting time is as crucial for brain health as exercise.
