Early Detection Key to Beating Hypertension: Doctor

Hospital urges regular monitoring, lifestyle changes to tackle India’s growing blood pressure crisis

On the occasion of World Hypertension Day, observed annually on May 17, Olive Hospital, a trusted name in healthcare dedicated to better health outcomes, highlighted the urgent need to address the growing health crisis posed by hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure. The theme for this year, "Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer," underscores the importance of precise blood pressure measurement and effective control.

Hypertension, often called the "silent killer," is a serious public health issue in India and a key risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, strokes, and kidney failure. Its incidence has reached epidemic proportions, with about 200 million adults affected nationwide. However, only around 15% have their condition under control, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). A recent study published in the Journal of Human Hypertension reveals that 22.6% of Indian adults suffer from hypertension, with men (24.1%) affected more than women (21.2%).

Dr. Zahedullah Khan, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Olive Hospital, said, “Patients usually come to see me only after hypertension has caused severe complications such as heart attacks or end-stage heart failure. Many of these emergencies could have been avoided with early detection or regular monitoring. It is crucial to take control early by checking your blood pressure regularly and not waiting for symptoms. Prevention through education and ongoing care is our best weapon to save lives and safeguard hearts.”

At Olive Hospital, treating hypertension involves holistic care and community participation. The hospital’s team of cardiologists, endocrinologists, nephrologists, and primary care providers offer individualized treatment plans that include lifestyle changes, pharmacotherapy, and interventional therapies when necessary.
