Kochi: In a remarkable act of love and sacrifice, a brother and sister-in-law from Aluva, in Kerala, donated organs to save the life of 43-year-old Sreenath B Nair, who was battling multi-organ failure. The rare double transplant — a kidney from his sister, Sreedevi, and a portion of liver from her husband, Vipin M N — was performed at Aster Medcity, Kochi.
Sreenath, a travel agency owner, had developed liver cirrhosis and chronic kidney disease following a sudden illness last year, eventually requiring both a liver and kidney transplant. When his sister volunteered her kidney, the family struggled to find a suitable liver donor until Vipin stepped forward.
The complex procedure, led by Dr. Mathew Jacob and Dr. V. Narayanan Unni, faced multiple delays due to medical complications, including a six-month wait to clear an infection and additional time for Vipin to address a fatty liver condition.
“This was a challenging case medically and ethically. The family’s determination and the coordinated efforts of the surgical and care teams made the outcome possible,” Dr. Jacob said.
Three months after surgery, all three are in good health. “What my sister and brother-in-law did for me is something I can never repay,” Sreenath said.
