'Children Who Eat Fast Food Are More Likely To Suffer From Severe Asthma'

If one or both parents have asthma, the likelihood of their children developing it is higher, Read on to know more about the this chronic condition

Changing lifestyles and environmental conditions are leading to a rise in several health issues, and asthma is one of them. It affects people of all age groups and is becoming increasingly common. Alarmingly, deaths due to asthma are also being reported. In India alone, between 5 to 15 out of every 100 children under the age of 11 are affected by asthma.

To raise awareness about this chronic condition, World Asthma Day is observed every year on the first Tuesday of May. On this occasion, let’s understand asthma a little better.
What is Asthma?
Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition, also known as bronchial asthma. Our lungs have airways through which the air we breathe passes in and out. In asthma, due to various triggers, the muscles around these airways swell and tighten, causing them to become narrow. This makes breathing difficult. Even small amounts of physical activity like walking can cause breathlessness. Wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath are common symptoms. While asthma can affect people of all ages, it is more commonly seen in children and adolescents.
Many people believe that asthma patients should avoid physical exercise, but with proper medical guidance, exercise is not only safe but also beneficial.
What Causes Asthma?
Asthma occurs when the airways become inflamed and swollen. The exact reason behind this inflammation is still not fully understood. However, factors like diet, environment, and genetics are believed to contribute. Children with skin conditions like eczema are more likely to develop asthma. If one or both parents have asthma, the likelihood of their children developing it is higher.
Other contributing factors include:
Smoking and alcohol consumption, Air pollution, Exposure to chemical fumes, Dust, pet dander, cockroach droppings, pollen, grass, and mold spores, which can trigger allergic reactions and lead to asthma, Viral infections like the common cold can also trigger asthma attacks
Can Junk Food Lead to Asthma in Children?
Yes. A study found that children who eat fast food three or more times a week are more likely to suffer from severe asthma and skin diseases. Items like burgers and other processed foods have been linked to worsening asthma symptoms.
Managing Asthma:
In severe cases, steroids may be prescribed, but only under medical supervision. People often carry inhalers with them at all times once they are diagnosed. However, inhalers should be used correctly and only as directed by a doctor.
Asthma can be controlled effectively with lifestyle changes, medications, and awareness. It is not a condition that should prevent one from leading a full, active life—especially when guided by proper medical advice.
