Size matters for wine drinkers

When researchers calculated the capacity of each glass, they found a noticable increase in the 1990s.

According to a recent study published in the British Medical Journal, the size of wine glasses sold in the United Kingdom has increased over the past 300 years. The rise in glass size is in accord with the level of consumption going higher especially in the last 20 years.

The researchers found that alcohol consumption boomed in England during 1960s and ’80s. And with the growing competition in the alcohol market, it doubled between 1989 and 2004.

When researchers calculated the capacity of each glass, they found a noticable increase in the 1990s. They obtained 411 types of wine glasses from the Department of Western Art, at the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology at the University of Oxford, for the experiment. It was concluded that wine glass capacity has increased from 66ml in 1700 to 449 ml in 2017.
