Go slim with red wine
A study has revealed that drinking red wine on a regular basis can counteract the negative impact of high-fat, and high-sugar diets. The findings, which were published in the journal Frontiers in Physiology, talk about health benefits of resveratrol, a natural phenol present in blueberries, raspberries, mulberry, grape skins and, by that virtue, in red wine.
Resveratrol has been known to show positive effects on slowing the onset of diabetes as well as increase the lifespan of mice. It also reflected the positive effects of aerobic exercise in mice that were fed high-fat and high-sugar diets.
Now, researches from Georgetown University in the US studied the effect of resveratrol, included in the diet of rhesus monkeys. A control group of the monkeys were fed a healthy diet while another was given a high-fat, high-sugar diet; half of the latter group also received a resveratrol supplement. The idea was to study the effect of the diet as well as the phenol on the muscles present in the back of the leg.
The findings also revealed that the muscle used extensively in standing and walking was most affected by the high-fat diet as well as by the resveratrol supplements.
So, that regular glass of red wine along with your meal could actually be beneficial for your health, but researchers warn that it cannot completely substitute a healthy diet.
