Hot out of the oven

A dive into the world of home-bakers, who were qualified for the Under 25 Summit held recently.

They are young and passionate about what they do. Shweta Sachdev and Praneetha Ravichitti spend hours in the kitchen whipping up delicious cakes, much to the delight of their customers.

In June this year, 18-year-old Shweta began her baking journey as a professional with Obsessions — Cakes and Bakes. “Though I professionally started baking this year, I’ve been baking since the last five years. I learnt a lot about baking over the Internet. I’m a home-baker and have catered for 20 big events apart from taking regular orders,” says Shweta, a second year B.Com International Business student from St. Francis College for Women.

Praneetha Ravichitti, an MBA student from Institute of Public Enterprise, began her journey into the world of baking by putting up stalls in her college, while her cousin-chef helps her with the recipes. “It’s been five years that I started baking,” she says. Through her brand Little Indulgence, Praneetha delivers 5-6 cakes every month. She also makes cupcakes, cookies and other desserts. The 21-year-old’s biggest support? Her dad.

How do they get time to bake? “I bake in the afternoon after I come back home from college. Baking is all about time management. Once you receive an order, you must pre-plan and make sure you deliver the best. My family has been very supportive too,” says Shweta.

Baking as a business comes with its share of challenges. “It’s not easy to bake and study. There are days I had exams and came back home to bake. While completing orders, I bake 9-10 hours in the night. I feel like giving up but I pull myself up because there is nothing I cannot do for baking,” says Praneetha with passion.

Their plans for the future? “I plan on opening a bakery after I finish college,” says Shweta. Praneetha adds, “I plan on supplying to MNCs as well as opening a cute little store.”
