KANNUR: In Kannur, now one can buy fresh fish and safe vegetables from a single outlet neatly packed, thanks to district panchayat’s initiative Aqua-Green Mart. First of its kind in any district panchayat in Kerala, the air-conditioned outlet with modern facilities at district panchayat’s commercial complex in city provides the customers a wide range of fishes to select from, which will be delivered after cutting and packing.
Organic vegetables collected from various farmers’ groups and farms are also available in the Mart. If proven successful, the district panchayat is also planning to sell fishes and vegetables through online in future. The fishes are cut and packed from a centre at Aayikkara Beach and then taken to the Aqua-Green Mart. Customers can select the fishes from the live ones exhibited at the Mart and the packed fish for the required quantity will be delivered. Vegtables and fishes are directly collecting from farmers and fishermen societies via Agriculture department and fisheries department.
Speaking to DC, District Panchayat vice-president P.P. Divya said that the initiative will give a boost to the fishermen as well as farmers. “We are selling wide range of products for economical rate. We may also expedite the possibilities to start similar counters in other parts of the district,” she said. The Aqua-Green Mart was inaugurated by Fisheries Minister J Mercykutty Amma. Addressing the gathering, she opined that the initiative is model to follow for others and assure a permanent market for the fish products and vegetables.
