Eco-friendly wine high on taste: Study

Organic wine is named so for wine made not only from organic grapes, but also the process by which it is made.

With organic food reigning supreme, a study has now shown that wine made from organic grapes taste better than regular ones. Not only are the eco-certified wines better tasting, they’re also often cheaper than the regular alternatives. The University of California — Los Angeles conducted a study that showed professional wine reviewers had given the eco-certified variants of the wine a higher rating compared to the regular ones.

Scores of more than 74,000 California wines from magazines like Wine Advocate, Wine Enthusiast and Wine Spectator were taken into account for the research, and it was found that eco-certified wines scored an average of 4.1 points higher on a standardised 100-point scale. The study, however, took eco-certified wine, which included wine made with grapes from organic and biodynamic farms and did not take organic wine itself into consideration.

Organic wine is named so for wine made not only from organic grapes, but also the process by which it is made. Lead author of the research explained that consumers are usually unwilling to buy organic wine because it sours quickly because it is preservative-free. But, thanks to this misconception, better quality wines are now available at low prices.
