Chennai weavers making jeans out of banana fibre drive fashion revolution

The village is trying to keep its tradition alive while trying to make eco-friendly products at the same time

Wearing denim jeans in the summers is quite uncomfortable because the heat can be quite a buzz-kill for people looking to dress casual. While wearing other fabrics can be quite expensive, a village in Chennai is changing the way we look at jeans to make them affordable and wearable in the summers while being eco-friendly at the same time.

According to a media report, Anakaputhur, a weaver’s village in Chennai preserving their tradition by introducing new products and their latest are jeans made from banana fibre. The third-generation weavers have made the eco-friendly jeans with cotton and banana fibre and helps absorb more water (sweat) in the summers. The weavers are part of the Jute Weavers Association that has currently made jeans and skirts using the fibre.

Interestingly, the buttons on the jeans are made from coconut shells rather than using metal or plastic. The attempt is to make the jeans completely eco-friendly while benefiting people wearing it.
