Dawn of the new-age sarees

Are we ready for the whirlwind of trends that are shaping the elegant saree?

The sarees in India’s fashion scene has never looked better than now. Ever thought of fur, feather or fringes in sarees earlier? Seen recently on the ramp at a few fashion weeks, were fur sarees as well as ones with fringed blouses! Not to miss Masaba Gupta’s denim take on the saree that was seen on Sonam Kapoor recently. Is this trend here to stay?

“I’m not sure how well fur would work with a saree,” says costume designer Anu Parthasarthy. “I’ve seen great fringe work in sarees — in pallus or blouses and unique ways of draping, and I definitely see that becoming a trend but I’m more apprehensive of fur,” she elaborates.

Anaka Narayanan, the owner of fashion label Brass Tacks says, “The saree as a draped garment is here to stay so I can understand that some designers wish to innovate and add elements to make the saree more unique, or in their eyes more updated. It is indeed the role of a designer to push our boundaries and make us see things we wouldn’t imagine in our own. Personally, my taste in sarees is more traditional, I’m drawn to woven designs.”

She adds, “I think it’s possible celebrities might wear these trends on red carpets, but they are not representative of trends being adopted by the masses. I think it’s too early to say if masses will adopt it. What happens in the next ten years with the saree is anybody’s guess — wild things we haven’t even imagined could happen.”

For fashion blogger, Sushmita Agarwal, the new wave of sarees is a breath of fresh air. “I think it’s really great. Even off-shoulder or one-shoulder blouses are coming in strong. I think the incorporation of western elements in sarees is making it much more wearable.”

She also adds her own tips to styling these, “I definitely see a more western touch to Indian wear taking over. But when you try these trends, it’s important to keep in mind that all of them don’t necessarily look good off the ramp. Keep it minimal yet statement making. If a saree is a full-fledged denim one like Masaba’s, wear accessories that don’t take attention away from the garment itself.”
