Move over military and think utility with trendy boiler suits. The perfect utilitarian wear with functional designs is slowly taking over fashion scene, and trending as an obvious choice among celebrities. Whether you need to sport a glamourous airport look or stand out and safe on a rainy day, this piece of wardrobe will come in handy on days when you are pressed for time.

Boiler suits were initially used as workforce uniform, but slowly over a period of time, stylising the look and designing details lead to us accepting it as an everyday garment that can be worn by all. Designer Masumi Mewawalla,  points out that there is a marked rise in the demand for denim boiler suits. She compares it to the retro trends and return of design details like old press button, zippers, oversized buttons, etc.

She says, “In terms of designing, boiler suits have always been static with minor changes that make the most difference. Changes in collar to V neckline and lapel collar, rolled-up sleeves with a loop, short sleeves or full sleeves with stiff cuffs are trending. Pockets have majorly been zippers or patch pockets, but by variation in the shape, size, and patterns we escalate the look. With regards to the fabrics for boilersuit, we have noticed denim being accepted widely in the international market. Sleek designs, narrow bottoms, and body fitting are quite in this season.”

On certain days when it’s hard to find an appropriate outfit to wear and you want to put in zero effort into your outfit and still look chic, a boiler suit is an easy option to throw on, it will have you ready for your day in no time.

Designer Swapna Anumolu, finds them extremely comfortable and apt for casual wear. She says, “The fabrics used to make these may vary from cotton to polycotton. The classic boiler suits like the navy, olive green or black are trending the most. Also, bright colours and floral themed boiler suits are starting to get a huge crowd.

Denim boiler suits with mid sleeves can be a really good choice during a casual day out. To add definition to the outfit cinch the waist with a wide belt. To accessorise it, add pop colour stilettos and gold hoop earrings to keep it sleek and simple. Balance these strong outfits by pairing them with trendy heels or accessories give a feminine touch. In terms of jewellry, minimalism is the best, maybe a bracelet and delicate earrings will balance the entire look. Scarfs can also be used to tweak the styling.”

Utility pieces like the boiler suit are extremely powerful style statements, so it’s safe to invest in comfort without compromising on style. Designer Dharna Hasija says boiler suits have always been there, but this year they are stealing the limelight. “They are modified versions of the jumpsuit, with loose tops and pants joined in the centre, often accentuated with side pockets or belts. There are different ways of wearing boiler suits, depending on day or night occasions. Elements like a front zipper and side cinches are great if you’re looking for a sportier take on the trend. Pair it with boots or sneakers and if you are wearing a subtle shade, add bright accessories like bag, belt, broach, etc to make it a fun look.”

Most of the boilersuits are noticed to have either belts or front tie-up, if you happen to pick something that doesn’t have any details, you could pair it with a nice big buckle leather belt. Those who are willing to experiment and try something different can also opt for neon colour boilersuits with reflector tapes that make them quite quirky.
