There’s a right way and a wrong way even for the simple process of scrubbing your skin

Exfoliation is the route to beautiful, smooth, and radiant skin. Exfoliation, also known as scrubbing, removes dead skin, unclogs pores and gives you a brighter complexion. But if it is not performed properly, exfoliation can cause abrasions and cuts and leave the skin very sensitive.

“If you don’t clean your face for a long time, your skin will become dull, and you will develop pigmentation, blackheads, and whiteheads,” says Pooja Nagdev, Cosmetologist, Aromatherapist, and Founder of Inatur, a herbal beauty care brand.  “Exfoliation is an integral aspect of our skincare routine. It is important to understand how to exfoliate and what products to use,” she adds.
Pooja lists some ways to ensure that it’s done correctly.

Look for a Natural Exfoliant
Natural exfoliants derived from plants, seeds or fruits are the best options. Even among these, there are some that have to be applied with care. Walnut shell powder, for example, is a harsh exfoliator that should only be used sparingly. Papaya seed powder, pomegranate seed powder and orange peel powder, on the other hand, are very soft and mild and can be used safely on the face. Choose a sulfate and paraben-free vegan exfoliant made with natural ingredients.

Gentle scrubbing
It's important to pay attention to the movement of the fingers. When exfoliating, keep moving your fingers gently and lightly. If you move your hands quickly, you risk injuring your face.

Cater to skin type
Understand your skin type and choose the correct exfoliator. Some exfoliators are not recommended for dry skin, and others won’t suit oily skins. For oily skin, a gel-based product is best, and for dry and highly dry skin, a cream or oil-based product will be ideal.

Close the pores
A decent after-scrubbing cream or moisturizer is a must after exfoliation. The process opens the skin pores, so it’s important to follow up with a good moisturizer, face cream, face oil, sunscreen, or serum to close the pores and lock in the moisture, keeping the skin hydrated and supple.

Be conscious of scrub quantity
Use only a coin sized amount of the product for the face and a teaspoon sized quantity for the rest of the body. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that more is better.

“Select the right product, use it at the right frequency in the right way. Don’t overdo things. And take steps to close the pores,” Pooja sums up.
