Coffee goes skin-deep

If you thought coffee is merely a magic drink that turns the grumpy in you to a happy you, think again

Who doesn’t love their morning cuppa Joe? While moderate consumption of this ‘wonder drink’ provides antioxidants internally, coffee purportedly offers benefits topically too. In fact, coffee has been identified as a superfood for our skin.

So, why not pamper your skin with a mask, scrub or paste infused with coffee for a hydrated and rejuvenated look?

Dolly Kumar, Cosmetic Engineer and Founder and Director at Cosmic Nutracos Solutions Pvt Ltd, the parent company to the skincare brand Skinella, shares notes on how applying this caffeine-packed superfood could help you achieve your skin goals:

Source of antioxidants
Our environment today is full of free radicals, particles that can severely damage our skin. However, the antioxidants in coffee could protect it from the free radicals. So, why not go for a coffee-chocolate face mask to treat your skin? Infused with the energy of coffee and cocoa beans, this mask is rich in antioxidants, which keeps your skin smooth and supple.

Helps to reduce under-eye puffiness and dark circles
Another great benefit of coffee is that it can help remove excess water and relax blood vessels that cause under-eye puffiness and dark circles.
Whip up a mixture of coffee and yogurt to make a mask that helps in reducing your under-eye puffiness. All you need is two tablespoons of ground coffee and three tablespoons of yogurt. Mix it well and apply it to your face. Leave it on for around 20 minutes and rinse it off with warm water. Also, rubbing a coffee ice cube under your eyes helps in eliminating puffiness.

May protect from UV rays
Coffee is also a source of polyphenols that can help in protecting against ultraviolet (UV)) rays. It can even help prevent some signs of ageing caused by sun exposure. Some studies have shown that caffeine might inhibit the DNA damage response, in turn, protecting the skin against the harmful effects of UVB rays.

Makes skin smooth and bright
If drinking coffee perks us up instantly, applying it to the skin enhances its smoothness and brightness just as quickly. When you use a coffee mask or scrub, it boosts blood flow while adding to your skin a quick glow. It can also prevent wrinkles while reducing the loss of collagen from the skin. This will leave your skin look smooth, youthful and bright.

Could help reduce cellulite production
The caffeine absorbed by the skin can help reduce the appearance of cellulite. This is because it dilates blood vessels beneath the skin and improves blood flow. This can be achieved by using a coffee scrub regularly.
In conclusion, coffee is not only that aromatic, delicious drink you crave your daily boost of energy from, but also an excellent remedy for skincare. So, next time you seek your caffeine fix, don’t forget that your skin needs it too!
