Beauty at a price: Doctors advice users to do patch test
Hyderabad: Dermatologists advise patients to use natural products to maintain the quality of their skin in the long term. Cosmetic users are also advised to conduct patch tests, by applying products to small sections of their forearms or legs, before applying them to their faces.
Dr Manmohan Gavvala, a dermatologist, said, “One should always check if the cosmetics suit one’s skin type. Indian skin does not require much cosmetics, but if one needs to use it, it is better to not use overnight creams.”
Skin specialists say that leaving a cream on the face overnight can harm the skin. They suggest the use of aloe vera, turmeric or sandalwood to maintain the skin’s moisture. They say that these natural products are much better than chemical ones which can potentially cause allergic reactions.
Dr Akansh Jain, a dermatologist, said, “Rather than applying chemicals, people should eat more fruits, leafy vegetables and drink more water to improve the skin. Using cosmetics once in a while is not harmful, but the best way to keep your skin looking fresh is to wash your face thrice a day.”
Dermatologists also ask people to make sure that the lipsticks and eye pencils that they use are of good quality. “It is important to ensure that good quality brands are used. Try to make use of chemical products less frequently, and instead use home made packs containing natural ingredients such as tomatoes and honey which can help remove tan and scars,” said Dr Priyanka Nair, a dermatologist.
